Lebanon Resistance & Liberation Day
On 25th May 2000 the Israeli army withdrew from territory in Southern Lebganon marking the end of the Occupation of South Lebanon (1985-2000). The withdrawal came after the continued attack on Israeli military positions in occupied Lebanese territory by Lebanese Resistance forced Israeli militias to withdraw.
The holiday is celebrated with parades, rallies, ceremonies, political marches and speeches especially in the south of Lebanon where the people were most affected by the invasion.
Jordan Independence Day
This marks Jordan’s independence in 1946 from the United Kingdom. Following Great Arab Revolt during World War I, the Ottoman Empire, which included Jordan, was partioned by Britain and France, leading to the establishment of the Emirate of Transjordan as a British protectorate in 1921. Following World War II, the Jordanian and British governments entered into negotiations for Jordan’s independence, which were finalised in the Treaty of London in 1946. The arrangement transformed the emirate into a kingdom, which officially became known as the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The holiday is usually marked with official ceremonies attended by members of the House of Hashim, as well as civil and military officials. Award presentations, political speeches and diplomatic visits are also held as well as a military parade, a 21 gun salute in the capital and a fireworks displays.
Towel Day
This is celebrated every year since 25th May 2001 as a tribute to the author Douglas Adams by his fans. On this day fans openly carry a towel with them, as described in the his book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” to demonstrate their appreciation for the books and the author.
