Africa Day

This is the annual commemoration of the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25th May 1963. The organisation was replaced by the African Union on 9th July 2002, but the holiday continues on the 25th May.

The First Congress of Independent African States was held in Accra, Ghana on 15th April 1958. The conference called for the founding of an African Freedom Day. Five years later representatives of 30 African nations met in Ethiopia. At this meeting the Organisation of African Unity was founded, with the aim to encourage the decolonisation of those countries that were not independent. The charter was signed on 26th May 1963 with the exception of Morocco.
