World Refugee Day
This is international day to honour people who have been forced to flee. It honours the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home county to escape conflict or persecution. It shines a light on the rights, needs and dreams of refugees, helping to mobilise political will and resources so refugees can not only survive but thrive. It helps focus global attention on the plight of those fleeing conflict or persecution.
Argentina Flag Day
This is a holiday dedicated to the Argentine flag and to commemorate its creator Manuel Belgrano on the anniversary of his death in 20th June 1820. The date was designated in 1938. The main place of the Flag Day commemorations is the National Flag Memorial in the city of Rosario in Santa Fe Province, where the flag was hoisted on two artillery batteries in opposite banks of the Parana River. The flag was created on 27th February 1812 but that date is not officially commemorated in any way. The celebrations consist of a public meeting, speeches by the municipal and provincial authorities, the attendance of the President and a parade including members of the military, veterans of the Malvinas War, the police force and a number of civilian organisations and associations.
Flag Day was created by law on 8th June 1938, initially it was a celebration held on a fixed day, but law then modified it to be commemorated on the third Monday of the month. This creates long weekends and boosts tourism. Hermes Binner made a project of law in 2006 to derrogate this modification and restore both celebrations, but the proposal expired because of not being treated by the Congress in a whole year. Nevertheless him and the mayor of Rosario, Miguel Lifschitz insisted on the 2010 Flag Day that Congress should repeal the law and restore the commemoration to fixed days.
