This day rallies the world for ocean and climate action throughout the year and on the 8th June. It was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development at the Earth Summit, but it didn’t start as a day till 2002 by Ocean Project. In December 2008, the UN General Assembly passed a declaration to officially recognise the day.
The purpose of the day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilise and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans. There is a theme each year, this year’s is “Planet Ocean: tides are changing.”
