This day commemorates the victory of Bangladesh forces over the Pakistani forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. The commanding officer of the Pakistani Forces surrendered on this day, ending the 9 month war and allowing the official secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh. The day is celebrated by a military parade, ceremonies, speeches, lectures, receptions and firework displays.
