This day celebrates when the country gained independence from Spain in 1821. Spain gained control with the arrival of settlers in the 16th century, and from 1538 until 1821 it was governed as part of Viceroyalty of Peru. The small town called Villa de Los Santos made the first cry of independence on 10th November 1821, and 11 days later an open town meeting was held and Panama was declared a sovereign entity and become independent from Spain. Celebrations include fireworks displays and parades.
