It commemorates the day when Pakistan acheived independence and was declared a sovereign state in 1947 following the end of British Raj. It came into existence as a result of the Pakistan Movement, which aimed for the creation of an independence Muslim state in the north-western regions of British India via partition. The movement was led by the All-India Muslim League under the leadership of Muhammed Ali Jinnah. The event was brought about by the Indian Independence Act 1947 which gave independence to the Dominion of Pakistan which was made up of West Pakistan (now modern Pakistan) and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
The main ceremony of the day takes place in Islamabad, where the national flag is hoisted at the Presidential and Parliament buildings. It is followed by the national anthem and live televised speeches by leaders. Other events include parades, cultural events and the playing of patriotic songs.
