This day celebrates the independence of the Republic of Mali in 1960 from the Mali Federation. France conquered Mali in 1898, making it part of French Sudan. In April 1959 it merged with Senegal to form the Mali Federation, but a transfer of power agreement was signed with France on 4th April 1960, which led to formal independence on 20th June of that year. But it was short-lived when Senegal proclaimed its independence on 20th August 1960, and then on 22nd September French Sudan declared its independence from the Mali Federation.
