This was first celebrated in 1844 after the Dominican Republic broke free of Haitian rule after 22 years after overthrowing the Haitian government. They had been under Spanish rule until 9th November 1821, before being taken over by Haiti. After they gained autonomy the island of Hispaniola was divided into Haiti and Dominican Republic.
