Dominican Constitution Day

This is a public holiday celebrated on the nearest Monday or Friday to the 6th November to create a three day weekend. The 6th November was when the country adopted its first constitution back in 1844. That year it proclaimed its independence from Haiti, and the constitution was signed in San Cristobal, a town near the capital Santo Domingo. It was modelled on the United States Constitution and featured a presidential form of government with many liberal tendencies.
