This is a public holiday in Romania celebrated every 24th January to commemorate the unification of the Romanian Principalities (Moldavia and Wallachia), also known as the “Little Union”, on 24th January under prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza. This was considered important as it was considered the first step towards a unitary Romanian state, achieved on 1st December 1918, when Romania celebrates its National Day.
This day was first adopted by the Senate on 2nd June 2014 and later by the Chamber of Deputies on 3rd December 2014. The holiday became official when Romanian President Traian Basescu signed a few days later a decree promulgating it on 16th December. Since 2016 the day is a non-working day in Romania. It is also celebrated in Moldova.
