This day has been celebrated since 1994, but it was on this day in 1991 that it was adopted after the fall of the Soviet Union and a failed coup in Moscow. It is celebrated with plenty of free events in libraries, parks and cultural centres such as concerts, lectures, exhibitions and workshops.

This day was officially founded by the former US President Ronald Reagan. He signed on 19th August 1988 the promulgation of 5847, which appeared on 21st August as National Day of the Third Age. Bennington Battle Day is a holiday unique to the state of Vermont in USA. It commemorates the American victory over the British at the Battle of Bennington during the American Revolutionary War in 1777. There is a battle re-enactment every year in the state held by the local history foundation.

VJ Day Victory in Japan Day marks the end of World War 2 as Japan surrendered to the Allies to end fighting in the far east that had carried on after VE Day back in May 1945.
