Myanmar Independence Day
This dates celebrates Myanmar’s Declaration of Independence from British Rule on 4th January 1948.
Burma was colonised by the British in the 19th century. The country was devastated during World War 2, with people from the country fighting on both sides of the war. Following the end of the war, General Aung San negotiated the Panglong Agreement with ethnic leaders that guaranteed the independence of Burma as an unified state. He became Deputy Chairman of the Executive Council of Burma, but in July 1947 political rivals backed by the British assassinated him. On 4th January 1948 at 4.20 a.m. (a time chosen for its auspiciousness by an astrologer) it became an independent republic, named the Union of Burma.
World Braille Day
This day has been celebrated since 2019, and raises awareness of the importance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realisation of the human rights for blind and partially sighted people.
