Tanzania Independence Day

This day celebrates the end of British rule in 1961. The British started ruling after World War One and was ruled as Tanganyika. The political movement within Tanzania began in 1954 with the creation of the Tanganyika African National Union, whose main objective was sovereignty for Tanganyika. British rule ended on 9th December 1961, and it became a democratic republic a year later on the same day. it merged with Zanzibar on 26th April 1964 and renamed to Tanzania in October of that year. It is celebrated with a presidential address, a military parade and performances by music groups at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
