Holidays on 3rd August

Niger Independence Day

Today marks the 60th anniversary of Niger gaining independence from the French. It has been a national festival since then, but it was in 1975 when the government began celebrating it through co-ordinated mass planting of trees in order to fight desertification. It is now celebrated with official festivals and appearances of political leaders, an official broadcast by the President as well as the tradition that every Nigerian plants a tree.

Venezuela Flag Day

This day used to be celebrated on 12th March as the original design of the flag was first flown on that day in 1806 at Jacmel, Haiti, as Francisco de Miranda started his expedition to liberate Venezuela. The first time it was flown on Venezuela was 3rd August that year, hence where the new date comes from.
