Mauritius Independence Day

This day celebrates the day Mauritius became an independent state within the Commonwealth. The country compromises four islands, and was first occupied by the Portuguese, then the Dutch, the French and finally the British. After World War II Britain acknowledged the importance of giving up its former colonies, and it adopted a new constitution and elected a new Prime Minister in 1968.
