Kuwait Independence Day

This day marks when Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah ascended to the throne in 1950. In 1756 the Al-Sabah family became the rulers of Kuwait, starting the dynasty that continues this day. In 1899, rather than face direct rule from the Ottoman Empire, Sheikh Mubarak ‘the great’ agreed that Kuwait would become a British Protectorate, with Britain providing naval protection in return for Kuwait allowing Britain to control its foreign affairs. On 19th June 1961 it became independent with the end of the British protectorate and the Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salim Al-Sabah became an Emir. The National Day was celebrated on this day in 1962, but they felt it was too hot to have it at that time. So the day was moved to the 25th February when the Sheikh ascended to the throne.

It is celebrated with an impressive fireworks display and public gathering with food and drink and lots of entertainment. People will dress in traditional customs and the whole of the country is decorated with lights and the national flag and other patriot emblems.
