This is a federal holiday in the USA celebrated on the third Monday of February to honour all those Presidents of the United States. February was chosen to honour two of their greatest Presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, who were born on the 22nd and 12th of the month respectively. This holiday can vary in different states, and was first created to honour Washington back in 1879, on his birthday 22nd February. In 1971, this was shifted to its date now, but wasn’t called President’s Day until the 1980s. It is called differently in different states such as Washington’s and/or Lincoln’s Birthday. Most businesses do remain open still, offering sales and promotions instead. A food traditionally associated with the holiday is cherry pie, based on the legend of Washington in his youth chopping down a cherry tree.
