Sri Lanka Independence Day
This day commemorates the country’s political independence from Britain in 1948. It is celebrated through a flag-hoisting ceremony, dances, parades and performances. The main celebration takes place in its capital Colombo, where the President raises the national flag and delivers a nationally televised speech.
World Cancer Day
This is a global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control. By raising worldwide awareness, improving education and catalysing personal, collective and government action. It was created in 2000 and each year hundreds of activities and events take place around the world. There is a different theme each year, and this year’s is ‘I Am and I Will’.
