Lithuania Constitution Day
Lithuania declared independence from the Soviet Union on 11th March 1990 and adopted a provisional constitution. Work on a new constitution was done over the next two years, and was approved by the Supreme Council in October 1992 and submitted to popular vote. It was approved in a referendum on 25th October 1992 with 75% voting in favour.
Slovenia Sovereignty Day
This day commemorates one of the key events in the process of gaining independence, being the withdrawal of the last Yugoslav People’s Army soldier from the territory of present-day Slovenia. It is a designated state holiday, but not a work-free day. The Ten-Day War started in the former Yugoslavia on 27th June 1991 between the Yugoslav army and the Slovenian Territorial Defence, ending on 7th July with Slovenia’s decisive victory and Slovenia becoming independent. In the Brioni Agreement signed by both parties, Slovenia agreed to postpone its independence by three months and the Yugoslav military was allowed to leave Slovenian territory in stages, with a deadline at the end of October. The last Yugoslav army soldier left around midnight on 25-26th October 1991.
