National Honey Bee Day
It is an awareness day when beekeepers, beekeeping clubs and associations, and honey bee enthusiasts from cross the USA celebrate honey bees and recognise their contribution to humans’ everyday lives as a means of protecting them. The event was started in 2009 by a small group of beekeepers who petitioned for and obtained a formal proclamation by the USDA honouring honey bees and beekeeping. It is celebrated on the third Saturday of August. It is managed by HoneyLove.org, a Los Angeles based honey bee educational non-profit organisation.
Afghan Independence Day
This day commemorates the Anglo-Afghan treaty of 1919 and relinquishment from protected state status. The treaty granted a complete neutral relationship between Afghanistan and Britain after it had become a British Protectorate after the British defeated Afghanistan in the Second Anglo-Afghan War.
World Humanitarian Day
The world commemorates humanitarian workers killed and injured in the course of their work, as well as honour all aid and health workers who continue to provide life-saving support and protection to people most in need.
The day was created in memory of the bomb attack on 19th August 2003 on the Canal Hotel in Iraq, killing 22 people, including the chief humanitarian in Iraq, Sergio Viera de Mello. It was formalised by the UN General Assembly in 2009.
