Holidays on 18th May

International Museum Day

This day has been celebrated since 1977. The objective is to raise awareness about the fact that “Museums are important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” Last year over 37,000 museums participated in the event in about 158 countries and territories. The theme for this year is “Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing.”

Somaliland Independence Day

This marks the polity’s declaration of independence from the Somali Democratic Republic, an unilateral proclamation which remains unrecognised all over the world. Although internationally only seen as an autonomous area of Somalia, the territory self-declared independence has been celebrated since 1991.

Turkmenistan Constitution Day

This day commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of Turkmenistan in 1992. It is the supreme law of Turkmenistan. It emphasises self-declaration for the Turkmen people, as well as the rule of law and rights for citizens. It is marked by a ceremony to lay spring flowers at the Monument to the Constitution in Ashgabat, the Turkmen capital. Other celebrations include a concert and poetry evenings.

Haiti Flag Day

This day celebrates the creation of the Flag of Haiti, which was adopted on this day in 1803. The day is also observed in numerous cities of the USA that have a large Haitian population. The grounds of the national palace in Haiti are the centre of the celebrations. On the last Sunday in May there is a Haitian Day parade followed by a festival celebrating the Haitian culture, music and food.
