Saint Joseph’s Day

This is the principal feast of Saint Joseph on 19th March, husband of the Virgin Mary and legal father of Jesus. The day was dedicated to him in several Western calendars by the 10th century, and this custom was established in Rome by 1479. It always falls doing lent, but it is a solemnity and per the 1983 Code of Canon Law, the obligation of fasting and abstinence overides Friday obligations in the Catholic Church. If it falls on a Sunday other than Palm Sunday, it is observed on the following Monday.
