World Oceans Day is celebrated annually on June 8th, and the day celebrates and honours our Oceans. The day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008, after originally being proposed by Canada in 1992. The day is marked in a variety of ways, including launching new campaigns and initiatives, special events at aquariums and zoos, aquatic and beach cleanups, educational and conversation programmes, art contests, film festivals and sustainable seafood events. Each year there is a different theme selected by the United Nations.
