Holidays on 26th September

European Day of Languages

This day has been celebrated since 2001 as part of a council of Europe initiative to use linguistic diversity as a tool for achieving greater intercultural understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of Europe.

The general objectives of the day are:

  1. Alerting the public to the importance of language learning and diversifying the range of languages learnt in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding;
  2. Promoting the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe, which must be preserved and fostered;
  3. Encouraging lifelong language learning in and out of school, whether for study purposes, for professional needs, for purposes of mobility or for pleasure and exchanges.

Ecuador Flag Day

This day celebrates when the tricolour flag of Greater Colombia was reinstated after the Marcist Revolution in 1860. Its reinstatement is commemorated as Dia de la Bandera, or National Flag Day.

World Cassowary Day

This is a day of celebration to draw international attention to the reasons Cassowaries are globally important and need to be protected. It showcases the Southern Cassowary and the conservation efforts of people working to protect them, their home, and the other unique and endangered animals of the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics Rainforests. The Southern Cassowary is a large, flightless bird with impressive colouring and strong, dinosaur-like feet.

World Environmental Health Day

This day was declared by the International Federation of Environmental Health. It encourages all member organisations and regional groups, academic associates and national governments to set up initiatives and events to celebrate the day.
