Autumn/Spring Equinox
Today is the September Equinox, which means it is now Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and Spring in the Southern. It occurred exactly at 13:31 UT. Day and night are exactly equal on this day.
World Car Free Day
This day encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day. Organised events are held in some cities and countries. This day was celebrated ad hoc from 1973, it wasn’t until 1995 that an informal day was organised, followed by the British having its first national campaign in 1997 and the French the year after. It went global in 2000.
Hobbit Day
This day is in reference to it being the birthday of the hobbits Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two fictional characters in J.R.R Tolkien’s popular set of books The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. It was first proclaimed by the American Tolkien Society in 1978, and fans celebrate by having parties and feasts.
Bulgaria Independence Day
This celebrates the independence of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire in 1908 in the old capital of Tarnavo by Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria, who afterwards took the title of “Tsar”.
Mali Independence Day
This day celebrates the independence of the Republic of Mali in 1960 from the Mali Federation. France conquered Mali in 1898, making it part of French Sudan. In April 1959 it merged with Senegal to form the Mali Federation, but a transfer of power agreement was signed with France on 4th April 1960, which led to formal independence on 20th June of that year. But it was short-lived when Senegal proclaimed its independence on 20th August 1960, and then on 22nd September French Sudan declared its independence from the Mali Federation.
World Rhino Day
This day provides the opportunity for organisations and people to celebrate the 5 species of rhinos. It was first founded in 2010 by WWF-South Africa, and grew into an international success thanks to Lisa Jane Campbell and Rhishja.
