International Talk Like a Pirate Day

This is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers of Albany, Oregon, U.S., who proclaimed 19th September each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. The holiday, and its observance, comes from a romanticised view of the Golden Age of Piracy.

The day came as a result of a racquetball game between Baur and Summer, when one of them reacted to the pain with an outburst of “Aaarrr!”, and the idea came from that. It happened on the 6th June, which is when D-Day happened, so they moved the date to Summers’ ex-wife’s birthday, as it would be easy for him to remember. The holiday gained exposure when they sent a letter about it to American syndicated humour columnist Dave Barry in 2002, who liked the idea and promoted the day.
