Roald Dahl Day celebrates the birth of author Roald Dahl and lets us share his characters and stories all over the world together.
He was born in Llandaff in Wales on 13th September 1916 to Norweigan parents, Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Hessleburg. He had a tough start in life with the death of his older sister and father. His mum sent him to boarding school at St Peter’s and then Repton, where he was invited to trial chocolate bars, a memory that came out through his story Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He travelled to Canada and East Africa, then enlisted in the Royal Air Force in World War 2. In 1953 he married Patricia Neal, with whom he had 5 children. They divorced after 30 years, and he later married Felicity Crosland. He started writing books in the 1960s, starting with James and the Giant Peach in 1961. He wrote many successful books, including several which went to film such as the BFG and Matilda. He died on 23rd November 1990 aged 74. He was buried at St Peter and St Paul Church in Great Missenden, where the Roal Dahl Museum and Story Centre is located.
