Today is a public holiday commemorating the anniversary of the allied victory in the Slovak National Uprising during World War 2 in 1944. It honours those from the Democratic Party, the Czech Social Democratic Party and Communist Party of Slovakia who took part in the Slovak resistance movement against rule from Nazi Germany. The date was chosen in 2003, and wreaths are laid in Bratislava at the memorial to the National Uprising. It is the national day of the Slovak republic.
