Three holidays on 19th August

Afghan Independence Day

This day commemorates the Anglo-Afghan treaty of 1919 and relinquishment from protected state status. The treaty granted a complete neutral relationship between Afghanistan and Britain after it had become a British Protectorate after the British defeated Afghanistan in the Second Anglo-Afghan War.

World Humanitarian Day

The world commemorates humanitarian workers killed and injured in the course of their work, as well as honour all aid and health workers who continue to provide life-saving support and protection to people most in need.

The day was created in memory of the bomb attack on 19th August 2003 on the Canal Hotel in Iraq, killing 22 people, including the chief humanitarian in Iraq, Sergio Viera de Mello. It was formalised by the UN General Assembly in 2009.

International Orangutan Day

It is to encourage the public to take action in preserving this species. It was set up by World Orangutan Events.
