Central African Republic Independence Day
Today marks independence of the country from France in 1960. French seized the country in 1894 and called it Ubangi-Shari, it became part of the Federation of French Equatorial Africa in 1910. After World War Two, it reached a nationalist milestone when Barthelemy Boganda, founder of the pro-independence Social Evolution Movement of Black Africa, became the first Central African to be elected to the French parliament. With the introduction of the fifth French Republic in 1958, the territory achieved self-government with Boganda as prime minister. He died in 1959, and one year later it achieved independence with David Dacko as its President, who was the nephew of Boganda.
