7th July – Solomon Islands Independence Day

Today marks Independence Day in the Solomon Islands, which was granted to the island in 1978 from Great Britain. The island had become too expensive for Britain to run after the first oil price shock occurred in 1973. Great Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II however remains Queen of the islands.
